Powell Park Dedicated
Several generations of the Cooper Family and City Commissioners welcome in the new Powell Park. After many years of deliberation and planning, the new Margaret Hayes Powell Park is open for business! The City of Brentwood held a ribbon cutting ceremony this past Saturday, April 20 to mark the grand opening. The 24 acres of passive parkland is located near the southeast corner of Virginia Way and Granny White Pike, right across the street from Brentwood Academy.
According to the City’s website: "Ms. Powell was born in 1889 and died in 1970. She was the daughter of Lysander Hayes (i.e. direct descendants to the original McGavock family that settled in Middle Tennessee after the American Revolution). Hayes owned the Midway Plantation, which at one time included the Brentwood Country Club, Meadowlake, McGavock Farms, and the Virginia Springs office park area. Ms. Powell grew up on this property, rode horses, etc. When she became an adult, she married a Powell and moved to Johnson City, Tennessee."
Brentwood now has 11 active parks, covering over almost 888 acres of parkland.

Brentwood Green Space Presents First Check to City Commission for Smith Park
At a February, 2013 Commission meeting, Gil Hutchinson, president of Citizens for Brentwood Green Space (CBGS), presented a $20,000 check to the Brentwood City Commission to go toward the purchase of the optional 80 acres for Smith Park. The check is part of the $300,000 goal set by CBGS to help with the purchase. The cost for the additional 80 acres for Marcella Vivrette Smith Park is $3 million. The city hopes to purchase the property, located on the northwest corner of Ravenswood Farm, from The Conservation Fund which holds an option on it. In December 2010, the city paid $10 million for 320 acres of adjacent property – the city’s largest land purchase -- for the new city park. The Conservation Fund facilitated that purchase from the Smith family.
Hutchinson updated the commission on the non-profit’s fundraising activities on behalf of the capital campaign which is expected to involve both public and private funding. In April 2012, the city officially partnered with Citizens for Brentwood Green Space to help raise funds for the purchase as well as future park facilities and improvements. Please help with this optional purchase by donating now.
